The time is the 19th century. The Dread empire is at the height of its prosperity, and Foster and the maids are bound by a strange love. A new companion, Cherry, has joined too. But driven, as if cornered, to expand his wealth and power by Dread, the maids' hearts too are wounded and lose their balance... Before long the web of relationships comes to light, and thus the story reaches its climax...
Our take
An ensemble maid anime set in a fictional 19th-century empire, this is the fifth and final volume of the Kara no Naka no Kotori series. The cover line reads as a note that she was not alone after all, pointing at a chapter where the relationships inside the mansion converge.
Visual consistency is the strength. Every maid wears the same royal blue uniform with a white apron and frilled headdress, so hair color alone separates them: blonde, chestnut, brown, teal. The muted cel palette of the early 2000s keeps interiors and candelabra dark, leaving blue and white to carry the screen.
Released by Discovery. Newcomers can enter through the costume design and facial acting rather than the plot. The samples show the mood of the mansion.
