Story
I am the proprietress of this inn, the Shirasagi-kan, Yuriko Shiratori. Ever since I lost my late husband, the previous master, running the place hasn't gone as I'd hoped, and I've been struggling rather a lot. My biggest worry is that I can't reproduce the flavor of the previous master, who was also a skilled cook. Yet I can't manage to hire a new cook either, and these days simply maintaining the status quo is all I can do. But the running of the Shirasagi-kan holds a secret. A secret I'd rather no one ever knew, if possible...
Our take
Ryokan Shirasagi Ippakume opens a series that never leaves one building: a quiet hot-spring inn run by its widowed proprietress, Yuriko Shiratori.
The art is early-2000s cel work, with thick outlines, hard-edged shadows and flat saturated color. She sits on the wooden veranda in a deep green kimono with a violet obi, hair pinned up, garden stones behind her, the title carved into a wooden signboard.
As the first night of a series that continues like pages in a guest book, it is the natural entry point. Look at the kimono palette and the pacing of her expressions in the sample stills.
