Story
An age when nations and order alike have descended into chaos. Scattered across an Earth turned into a land swirling with photochemical smog stand countless city-states, each bearing a City Number. Suddenly, above one of them — City Number 96 — a floating ancient castle appears, led by the evil organization the Dark Mother. From within the steam-shrouded darkness, the Dark Mother's fiends begin their sinister work, hunting young girls... But at that moment, backlit by the moonlight, the form of an angel with bared skin rises into view. That silhouette is the goddess of justice who protects the girls. The people of the city call her Angel Blade!
Our take
Angel Blade is a 2001 fantasy action hentai anime from the Vanilla Series, built around a transforming battle heroine. The jacket credits Masami Obari (VIRUS, Gowcaizer) with character design and Uno Makoto (Love Hina) as animation director.
The look is cel era: flat color fills, hard-edged shadows, a saturated red, white, gold and violet palette. Sharp chins, spiked hair and gem-and-wing armor motifs mark the designer's hand, while monster designs get heavier silhouettes.
An armored heroine with an oversized sword against monsters is the visual spine, and volume 1 sets up the world. Check the samples for this early-2000s design language.
