Story
Takakage brings home Saya, a girl with whom he felt a fated encounter, and introduces her to his little sister Maiko. Maiko intuits: this is Saya herself, the very girl who appeared in her dream! Why did she have such a dream? And that indescribable sensation when she shook hands with her. It was an eerily, strangely powerful sense of oneness. Mayumi of the fortune-telling research club, intrigued by Takakage's story, investigated the shrine where Saya lives. There, she says, is a legend of immortality. "Could it be that the Saya from your dream is living on just as she was? Maybe you're dating your lover from a past life all over again." Even as he thinks how absurd that is, the repeated coincidences leave Takakage unable not to feel that something is at play. After returning home, Mayumi, still showing the heart of a girl in love, thought of Takakage: "A past-life lover is fine, but make it a proper romance, okay? I've given up, but I want Takakage to be happy..."
Our take
The second half of the Campus series from the Vanilla label, produced in 2001, mixes campus life with an occult period strand. The cover pairs a rippling poolside and a navy school swimsuit; the reverse lays out tatami rooms and a drawn blade.
Technically this is early-2000s cel work: thick outlines, two-tone shadows, a deliberately narrow palette. Ayame is distinguished by blue eyes and the volume of her long black hair, and the samples push moonlit interiors almost entirely into blue.
