Sorrow: The Servant
哀・従僕
Story
Rachel, placed in a convent from a young age, grows into a beautiful girl and enters the affiliated boarding school. But there, day in and day out, dreadful abuse from the bishop and the sisters awaited her. In her life of torment, her one hope was to visit her uncle, the Marquis Lucé who reigns over the capital's high society, and become the flower of society herself. And at last a messenger from the Marquis arrives—but it was, in truth, an invitation as a "pitiful servant"...
Our take
A Vanilla Series gothic set between a chapel, a boarding school and the salons of the capital.
The jacket builds a stained-glass cathedral behind brush-stroke lettering, then places Rachel in red against black gloves and boots, every pane of coloured glass painted separately. It is cel-era work: heavy outlines, flat fills, large glassy eyes. Samples move to a white chapel and blue tiled floors, where the red costume lifts off the background.
The sleeve credits Naomi Hayakawa as original creator and Mitsuzo Kitagawa as director, with copy about sensuality entwined with madness. Gothic art direction is the draw, so view the samples.
