Story
The young shepherd Cain, chasing after a sheep that strayed from the flock and wandered into the forest, enters a certain cave. In the darkness, something bumps against Cain's shoe! With a clatter, it fell over. It was an old jar, and as it rolled, the lid came off. Light rose like smoke within the cave, and the light eventually took form, and a beautiful fairy appeared. The one who had been sealed inside the jar was Elis, the "Spirit of the Earth." Following the spirit Elis's prophecy, Cain heads to a charcoal-burner's hut deep in the forest. But what awaited him there was Princess Charlotte, captured by bandits...
Our take
Old-school fantasy hentai anime: Mei King Episode 1 is a Vanilla Series title built on hand-painted cel work. The cover holds on Princess Charlotte, blonde drill curls, a white dress, petals scattered behind her.
Color does the character work. Elis, an earth spirit, is blue-skinned with white hair, a bandit is dark-skinned with red hair, and shading is cut in two flat tones, so even cave interiors stay hard-edged rather than blurred.
The episode opens the arc, from a shepherd named Cain uncorking an old jar to a princess in bandit hands. Murakami Teruaki directed and designed the characters. See the samples for the period look.
