Story
When Takeshi arrives home, his stepmother Shino greets him. "Welcome back. Takeshi, Shinobu." Shinobu hides behind Takeshi. His stepsister Shinobu has come to be attached to Takeshi while avoiding her real mother Shino. Seeing this, Shino gives a slightly wry smile and says, "Dinner's ready."... The Oshino family's dinner table looks harmonious at a glance. Shino cheerfully talks about what happened that day, and Takeshi responds normally. But Shinobu can't quite fit into that circle. And Takeshi is considerate toward such a Shinobu. A strange scene where only Shino is excessively cheerful. Whether because she doesn't want to face reality inside the house, or to over-assert herself, Shinobu quickly returns to her room and goes to sleep. Once Shinobu has gone to bed, the Oshino family's true night begins. As always, Takeshi is dragged into Shino's room and made to be her partner. Takeshi's feelings are completely ignored. Even so, fearing that this would be exposed to Shinobu and that she'd despise him, Takeshi ends up going along with it after all.
Our take
One household, one closed stage. This mid 2000s Vanilla Series OVA builds its tension at the dinner table, where conversation keeps drifting out of step. The package credits Vanilla itself as the original work.
The art has the softness of its era: pale skin, thin lines, green tatami and wood grain throughout. The cover gives most of its space to an ash haired woman in blue lace, framed by a red band and a brushstroke title. Beside her sits an orange twintailed girl in a sailor uniform, and their expressions sit at different temperatures.
Split in two, the story tilts toward the night hours. Check the samples for how that quiet is composed.
