Our take

Kunoichi Sakuya is a Japanese ninja fantasy OVA, and this is its second volume. Sisters Sakuya and Hotaru of the Nagiri line fall into the hands of the Manjidani ninja, while Hikage, once an ally, watches with an agenda of his own.

Purple dominates the palette: hair, robes and shadow all sit in the same violet range, against stone walls and torch orange. Outlines run thick, eye highlights are flat and hard, and the shading has the clean two-step cut of 2011 cel-look animation.

The back cover is tiled with stills from dim cells and firelit corridors, which tells you where the volume spends its time. Watch the samples if that world appeals.
